Johannesburg – The N12 freeway has been closed in both directions between Klipspruit Valley Road (K43) and Abubakar Asvat Drive following protest action at Nana’s Farm in Lenasia, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has announced.
In a traffic advisory issued at 04:40 on Monday, 26 October, the JMPD said the protests had caused severe traffic disruptions, with several roads in the area closed or restricted.
“The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) strongly advises all motorists and road users of severe traffic disruptions and ongoing road closures caused by intense protest action that flared up at Nana’s Farm in Lenasia,” the department said.
In addition to the N12 closure, access to Klipspruit Valley Road near the freeway interchange has been blocked or restricted, while Abubakar Asvat Drive is closed to incoming and outgoing traffic.
JMPD officers have been deployed to manage traffic and respond to the disturbance.
“The situation remains highly tense. Motorists are strictly urged to stay clear of the area for their safety,” the department said.
Motorists travelling between Lenasia, Eldorado Park, Soweto and Johannesburg South have been advised to avoid the affected roads and use alternative routes.
The recommended detours are the R554 (Nirvana Drive), Golden Highway (R553), Chris Hani Road and the main road through Eldorado Park.
The JMPD has not provided further details about the cause of the protest, the number of people involved or whether any injuries or arrests have been reported.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution, follow directions from traffic officers and allow extra time for their journeys while the road closures remain in place.
