According to Reuters, the committee highlighted growing pressure on international legal institutions, warning that “the system of international law is under tremendous pressure, and its institutions are under attack”.
Born in Durban in 1941, Pillay built an international legal career after challenging racial discrimination during apartheid. She became the first woman to establish a law practice in Natal in 1967 and later became the first non-white woman to serve on South Africa’s High Court, Reuters reported.
She went on to serve as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court, as well as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Her work has included efforts to prosecute war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, including landmark international cases involving sexual violence.
Pillay also chaired the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel, which concluded in 2025 that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza. Israel has strongly rejected the findings, describing the report as “scandalous”, according to Reuters.
The Associated Press reported that Pillay received the news while attending a forum on international law in Nuremberg, Germany, where she was given a standing ovation.
“You know, you don’t want to receive an award, prize or anything unless the public agrees that you deserve this,” Pillay told those attending the event, according to AP News.

The Nobel Committee said her career demonstrated the importance of holding powerful leaders and states accountable under international law while providing hope to victims of violence and conflict.
The prize is worth 12 million Swedish kronor, approximately US$1.2 million, and is scheduled to be presented in Oslo, Norway, on 10 December.
Pillay’s award places renewed international attention on South Africa’s contribution to human rights advocacy and the role of international legal institutions in pursuing justice and peaceful conflict resolution.
