Ekurhuleni – Preggy Padayachee, the uncle of former Crime Intelligence boss Major-General Feroz Khan, has been shot dead in what police suspect was a targeted hit on the R21 near Griffiths Road.
Padayachee was killed on Monday evening, 5 October 2026, while travelling towards OR Tambo International Airport. His friend was also wounded in the shooting.
According to The Citizen, police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said a driver travelling in a Fiat experienced a breakdown and called a friend for assistance.
The friend arrived with two other people and, while they were attending to the vehicle, gunshots were fired.
“The driver attempted to evade the gunfire but lost control of the vehicle, which collided with a jersey barrier,” Nevhuhulwi said.

According to sources, Padayachee had received threats.

The driver sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene, while one passenger was taken to hospital. A third occupant escaped unharmed.
Police are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder. No arrests have been made and the motive remains unknown.
SABC News also reported the incident, describing it as an apparent hit, although the circumstances surrounding the shooting were still unclear.
Padayachee previously became publicly known after Khan was shot in Houghton in June, shortly before the senior police officer was due to testify before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
Following the attack on Khan, Padayachee told Eyewitness News (EWN): “We most definitely want justice. Whoever did it must pay for it.”
Khan survived that shooting and has since faced scrutiny over allegations before the Madlanga Commission, while police investigations into his shooting were launched by the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, the Detective Service and the Political Killings Task Team.
The circumstances surrounding Padayachee’s killing, including whether it was connected to the earlier attack on his nephew, have not been established.
Police investigations are continuing.
