More than 100 infrastructure projects, worth a combined ZAR395 billion, are included in a pipeline of schemes that are expected to get off the ground in South Africa in the next 12 to 18 months.
State-owned Infrastructure South Africa has released its third Construction Book, which details infrastructure projects that have allocated budgets and will be ready for procurement in the next year or 18 months.
‘Our intention is to create a clearer line of sight between the forward infrastructure pipeline and the tenders that subsequently enter the market, enabling contractors, professional service providers, suppliers and financiers to plan and position themselves earlier,’ according to ISA head Mameetse Masemola
Engineering News reports that the book lists public-private projects for the first time.
‘This reflects the increasing importance of alternative procurement and financing approaches as government seeks to crowd in private-sector capital, expertise and operating capability,’ said Masemola.
The listed projects also cover sectors such as transport, water, energy, social infrastructure, digital infrastructure and municipal projects.
Masemola pointed out that the municipal sector is the biggest in the book, in terms of value. Municipal infrastructure comprises 10 projects valued at approximately R112 billion.
Digital infrastructure is included in the book for the first time, with three projects valued at approximately R28 billion.
In his foreword, the Minister of Public Works Dean McPherson said the book was more than a catalogue of projects. ‘It is an important market-signalling instrument and part of government’s commitment to building a more credible and predictable infrastructure pipeline,’ he said.
