Limpopo – Police in Mankweng have opened an inquest after the body of a 22-year-old woman was found along Sovenga Street, next to the University of Limpopo campus fence.
The woman’s body was discovered at about 06:00 on Sunday, 4 October 2026, while police were conducting patrols in the area.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), officers received information about a woman lying motionless along the university campus fence and immediately responded.
“Upon arrival, police found the body of the female victim partially clothed with her head positioned inside a trench adjacent to the fence,” SAPS said.
Police said an inspection of the body found no visible external injuries at the scene.
“A bag containing the deceased’s identity document and NSFAS card was found next to the body,” the police said.
Emergency Medical Services were called to the scene and declared the woman dead.
Police said it is suspected that the woman may have accidentally fallen into the trench, but the circumstances surrounding her death have not yet been established.
“It is suspected that the deceased may have accidentally fallen into the trench and the exact circumstances surrounding her death are under investigation,” SAPS said.
The identity of the deceased will be released once her family has been notified.
“Police have opened an inquest and investigations are continuing,” SAPS said.
