Kokstad – Police in Kokstad have opened an inquest after a decomposed body was discovered underneath an old vehicle at a house under construction in the Ematsheni area of Shayamoya.
The body was found on Thursday morning, 24 September 2026, according to the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Police said the condition of the remains was so severe that the person could not be identified and their gender could not be established.
“Due to the severity of decomposition, the body cannot be identified and its gender cannot be determined,” SAPS said in a statement.
An inquest docket has been registered as police investigate the circumstances surrounding the discovery.
SAPS said “no foul play is suspected at this stage.”
Investigations are continuing to establish the identity of the deceased and determine the circumstances that led to the body being found at the property.
