Midrand – Five people were killed and 10 others injured in a three-vehicle collision at the intersection of Old Pretoria Main Road and Maxwell Drive in Midrand.
The fatal crash occurred at about 17:00 on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, according to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).
Preliminary reports indicate that a red Toyota Hi-Ace minibus taxi was travelling northbound on Old Pretoria Main Road when its driver allegedly failed to stop at a traffic signal.

The taxi then collided with a black Mercedes-Benz G63 and a silver Mercedes-Benz C-Class travelling eastbound on Maxwell Drive.
Following the collision, both the Toyota Hi-Ace and the silver Mercedes-Benz caught fire.
“The adult male driver of the taxi sustained serious injuries and was transported to Tembisa Hospital,” the JMPD said in a statement.
“Tragically, five passengers (two males and three females) sustained fatal injuries, were burnt beyond recognition, and were removed to the Hillbrow Mortuary.”

A further 10 passengers sustained injuries ranging from slight to serious and were taken to various local hospitals for treatment.
The driver of the Mercedes-Benz G63 was not injured, while the female driver of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and two minor passengers in the vehicle also escaped unharmed.
A culpable homicide case will be opened at the Midrand SAPS station as investigations into the crash continue.
“JMPD officers attended a fatal three-vehicle accident” at the scene, the department said.
