Johannesburg – Gauteng police have arrested 10 suspects and recovered nine firearms after a shootout in Cleveland, Johannesburg.
According to The Citizen, the incident happened at about 7.36pm on Monday, 21 September 2026, after police spotted a suspicious Hyundai H100 fitted with blue lights and a siren.
Police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said the vehicle was driving erratically and repeatedly stopped and drove off when officers attempted to intercept it.
“Police called for backup and continued following the suspicious vehicle,” Sibeko said.
Investigations
When the vehicle eventually stopped, three suspects allegedly got out and opened fire at police, triggering a shootout. One suspect was fatally shot, while two others fled on foot, according to police.
Police then searched the vehicle and discovered 10 suspects inside. Nine firearms, magazines and live ammunition were recovered.
“Cleveland police have opened a case of murder, attempted murder, attempted business robbery, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition,” Sibeko said.
The suspects, aged between 30 and 54, are expected to appear in court as investigations continue.
The incident comes months after a mass shooting in Cleveland in which 12 people were killed at the Jumpers informal settlement. SAPS said at the time that more than 10 suspects had allegedly entered the settlement and opened fire on residents.
