Johannesburg – An Afrikaner family granted refugee status in the United States has been unable to return to the country after travelling back to South Africa for medical treatment.
According to YouTuber and US intelligence analyst Chris Wyatt, the family was prevented from returning to the US after travelling back to South Africa for what was described as a “quick trip”.
The family, comprising two adults and two children, had only recently been resettled in the US when they returned to South Africa for medical care after falling ill. They reportedly made the trip because they remained covered by a South African medical aid scheme.
When they later attempted to return to the US, they were refused entry because they did not have the required visa or travel authorisation.
Wyatt criticised the decision to return, alleging that the family and others who had done the same had “taken advantage of the United States’ generosity”.
“You cannot travel on your own. Refugees are escorted. They have people with them. Refugee status is a golden one-way ticket. It is not an authorisation to hop and skip and go where you want to
“Refugees are not permitted to return to their home country, precisely as they fled over fears of their safety. You can not simply leave the country without the government’s permission”.
According to News24, the family is now staying with a friend and living out of suitcases after selling their belongings before leaving for the US.
Refugee status and returning home
The case highlights the complications refugees can face when returning to the country from which they sought protection.
As reported by The South African, returning to South Africa can put the refugee status of South Africans resettled in the US at risk.
Guidance cited by the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) states that an unauthorised return to the country from which protection was sought may lead US authorities to question whether the person genuinely qualified for refugee status.
A return visit without prior approval from US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) can be treated as abandonment of refugee status unless there are compelling reasons for the trip. Such travel may also be viewed as evidence that the person’s claimed fear of persecution was not genuine.
Those who later decide to return to South Africa permanently may still be required to repay any interest-free travel loan provided by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
The US refugee programme for Afrikaners was introduced by President Donald Trump in 2025 after his administration said white South Africans faced racial discrimination and persecution. The South African government has rejected those claims.
Disagreement
Reuters reported in May that Trump had increased the US refugee admissions ceiling by 10,000 to 17,500 for the 2026 fiscal year, specifically allowing for more white South Africans to be admitted.
The South African government has disputed the US administration’s characterisation of conditions facing Afrikaners.
More than 13,000 white South Africans had been admitted to the US under the programme by September, according to The Guardian, while some applicants have also been rejected.
The precise immigration status of the family following the denied re-entry, and whether they have any avenue to return to the US, was not immediately clear.
The incident comes as the Trump administration continues to prioritise Afrikaner refugees under a programme that has remained the subject of disagreement between Washington and Pretoria.
