Tenth woman’s body found wrapped in duvet in Soweto dam as Gauteng killings remain under probe

Johannesburg – Police have opened an inquest after the body of an unidentified woman, believed to be in her twenties, was found wrapped in a duvet and dumped in a dam in Moroka, Soweto.

The body was discovered at about 5pm on Sunday.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death were not yet known.

“The victim is estimated to be in her twenties. The circumstances surrounding the incident are unknown at this stage.”

Police have registered an inquest following the discovery, while investigators are appealing to the public for information that could help establish the woman’s identity and determine how she died.

Tenth female body in Gauteng

The Soweto discovery comes as police investigate a series of deaths involving women in Ekurhuleni, where nine female bodies have been recovered over the past two months.

However, authorities have not established a link between the Soweto death and the Ekurhuleni cases.

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia said investigations into the Ekurhuleni killings had not conclusively established that a serial killer was responsible.

Three persons of interest have been called in for questioning.

“These investigations have not confirmed conclusively that we are dealing with a serial killer because all the cases are not necessarily linked and there is some indication of a different modus operandi as well as different motives,” Cachalia said.

The minister said investigators were continuing to examine the cases and that no possibility had been ruled out.

SAPS previously confirmed that the ninth body in the Ekurhuleni investigation was discovered in Dawn Park on 17 September, bringing the number of bodies found in that investigation to nine.

The police service said a multidisciplinary team had been mobilised to investigate the deaths.

Investigators were comparing evidence, timelines, locations, victim profiles and the circumstances surrounding the deaths as they worked to determine whether the cases were connected.
