Johannesburg – A woman who allegedly escaped a kidnapping in Kempton Park could provide investigators with crucial information as police probe the deaths of five women whose bodies have been found in and around the area since July.
According to The Citizen, the woman, who reportedly works at a hotel near Mosquito Park, was allegedly abducted on Sunday night before escaping and reaching Tembisa Police Station.
Local councillor Simon Lapping said the woman was giving a statement to police after the alleged abduction.
Police had not confirmed the circumstances of the incident at the time of publication.
The development could become significant if investigators identify similarities between the woman’s account and the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the five women.
Police are examining possible links between the cases but have cautioned against concluding that a serial killer is responsible.
Acting national police commissioner Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane said a multidisciplinary team had been tasked with intensifying the investigations.
“We will not rest until we have established the truth,” Dimpane said. “Where there is evidence linking individuals to these crimes, we will pursue them relentlessly and ensure that they face the full might of the law.”
SAPS has also increased its operational presence in the affected areas, deploying detectives, forensic experts, intelligence officers, tracking teams and K9 units.
The police have urged residents, motorists and security personnel with information about suspicious activity in Kempton Park, Rhodesfield and Olifantsfontein to come forward.
