Johannesburg – The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) has urged residents to exercise caution as persistent rainfall leaves roads slippery and causes water levels in rivers and streams to rise.
EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi urged motorists to slow down and avoid flooded roads and low-lying bridges.
“We are pleading with motorists to continue exercising caution while driving, extend their following distance and avoid crossing flooded roads and low-lying bridges,” he said.
Residents were also warned to keep children away from swollen waterways and drainage channels.
“We are pleading with our residents to avoid crossing river streams and to monitor young children to stay away from river systems and drainage channels,” Mulaudzi said.
EMS said it remains on high alert across all seven regions, with specialist Swift Water Rescue teams on standby.
“We remain on high alert and continue to monitor all seven regions of the city for any emergencies which might occur,” he said.
