Johannesburg – Former Brazil and Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has been discharged from a Rio de Janeiro hospital after spending 80 days receiving treatment for a serious lung condition.
The 83-year-old World Cup-winning coach was admitted to Hospital Samaritano Barra on 16 June with pulmonary inflammation and spent 43 days in intensive care before being transferred to a semi-intensive care unit in July.
According to The Citizen, the hospital said Parreira had “showed a favourable clinical response” during his stay and would continue receiving care at home and as an outpatient to monitor his overall condition.

Brazilian news agency Agência Brasil reported that Parreira was admitted to treat a pulmonary inflammation and remained under the care of pulmonologist Arthur Vianna and a multidisciplinary medical team.
His health deteriorated during his hospitalisation, requiring surgery and intensive medical intervention.
He required respiratory support, underwent a tracheostomy and received haemodialysis before his condition improved, UOL reported.
Parreira has also been battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system, which was diagnosed in 2023.

His recovery marks a positive development for one of football’s most decorated coaches. Parreira guided Brazil to the 1994 FIFA World Cup title and remains the only coach to have led Brazil at two World Cups in different eras, in 1994 and 2006.
He also coached South Africa at the 2010 World Cup on home soil.
Parreira received a warm send-off from family, hospital staff and supporters when he left the facility.
The coach will now continue his recovery under home and outpatient medical care.
