Three lives, one chilling crime: Former daycare worker gets three life terms

Bloemfontein – A former daycare centre employee has been sentenced to three life terms for the murders of a Bloemfontein couple and the woman’s mother in a case that South African police described as a painstaking cold-case investigation.

Mpheng Anna Ntsoeu, 30, was sentenced by the Free State High Court in Bloemfontein on Thursday, 3 September 2026, after being convicted of three counts of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and money laundering.

Ntsoeu received three life sentences for murder, as well as 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances and 10 years for money laundering. The sentences will run concurrently.

“The bodies of Christo Theron (36), his wife, Janine Theron (35), and Janine’s mother, Betsie Kruger (66), were discovered at approximately 08:50 on 29 June 2024 at Kruger’s residence in Van Heerden Street, Wilgehof,” police said in a statement.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the investigation had initially produced no clear leads identifying those responsible.

“The case was handed over to Captain Jacques Wilson in February 2024 as a cold case, with no clear leads pointing to the identity of the perpetrators. Undeterred by the lack of leads, Captain Wilson embarked on an intensive investigation, meticulously revisiting information, following up on leads and piecing together evidence,” said the police.

His efforts eventually resulted in a breakthrough in August 2024, when Ntsoeu and her boyfriend were arrested in connection with the killings.

“After months of painstaking investigation, their persistence eventually paid off when a breakthrough was made in August 2024, leading to the arrest of Mpheng Anna Ntsoeu (30) and her boyfriend in connection with the murders.
“Ntsoeu, a former employee at a daycare centre in Wilgehof, was subsequently brought before the Free State High Court in Bloemfontein.”

On 2 September 2026, Judge Corné van Zyl found Ntsoeu guilty on all the charges against her.

Her boyfriend and co-accused were acquitted of all charges.

Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia commended the investigating team for its work, saying the conviction demonstrated the importance of persistence in complex murder investigations.

Lesia specifically praised Captain Wilson and the wider team for their “commitment and perseverance” in ensuring that the case was not forgotten.

SAPS said the commissioner also commended the investigators for their “meticulous and determined work”, which ultimately culminated in Ntsoeu’s conviction and sentencing.

The prosecution was led by Advocate Lucky Bontes.

The case brings an end to a lengthy investigation into the deaths of the three victims, with Ntsoeu now set to serve life imprisonment for each of the three murders.
