Johannesburg – Pitso Mosimane has officially been unveiled as the new Bafana Bafana head coach, returning to the national team more than a decade after his first spell in charge.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) confirmed the appointment on Tuesday, ending weeks of uncertainty over who would succeed Hugo Broos, whose five-year tenure ended after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Mosimane will begin his second permanent stint after previously coaching Bafana from 2010 to 2012.
Mosimane takes over a team that made history at the 2026 World Cup by reaching the knockout stage for the first time. His immediate challenge will be the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, with South Africa set to face Guinea and Eritrea next month.
Accepting the job, Mosimane said: “I have been given the privilege of leading our national team again. I take this responsibility knowing that I still have something to give in football, especially in my country.”
He added: “I know this is simply not a coaching job; it is bigger than Pitso Mosimane. I understand the weight of this role, the expectations that come with it, and what this team means to South Africa. With pride and determination, I accept the challenge.”
The appointment marks a significant return for Mosimane, who went on to become one of Africa’s most successful coaches after leaving Bafana.
He won the CAF Champions League with Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016 and twice with Egyptian giants Al Ahly.
His return comes with expectations that he will build on the progress made under Broos while taking Bafana to another level ahead of the 2027 AFCON and the longer-term 2030 World Cup cycle.
Mosimane viewed the team as capable of raising the bar further.
