Cape Town – South African motorists could face significant fuel price increases in September 2026, according to mid-month data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF).
Petrol has moved into under-recovery territory, with 95 unleaded petrol showing a potential increase of 77 cents per litre and 93 petrol facing a possible 66-cent hike.
Diesel users face much steeper increases, with 0.05% diesel potentially rising by R2.73 per litre and 0.005% diesel by R2.90 per litre. Illuminating paraffin could increase by R2.14 per litre.
The projected increases are being driven largely by surging international crude oil prices, with Brent crude reaching about $92 a barrel amid escalating tensions in the Middle East and uncertainty around oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.
The relatively strong rand, trading at around R16.26 to the US dollar, has provided some relief but has not been enough to offset the rise in global oil prices.
The figures remain projections and could change before the official September fuel price adjustment is announced.
