Cape Town – A 40-year-old gunman was killed after a prolonged armed standoff with police in Robertson, Western Cape, prompting the deployment of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Special Task Force (STF).
The confrontation began when members of the Robertson Police Station responded to a complaint and came under fire from the armed suspect. Tactical Response Team (TRT) members were deployed as reinforcements before the situation was escalated to the STF.
“Our members demonstrated courage, discipline and tactical restraint in confronting an armed individual who posed a direct and serious threat to police officers and innocent members of the community,” Acting SAPS National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane said.
Dimpane commended the officers who responded to the initial complaint, the TRT members who provided reinforcement and the STF for its intervention, which brought the standoff to an end.
Two women who were inside a neighbouring house were safely rescued during the operation. An armoured police vehicle was damaged during the exchange of gunfire.
Dimpane said the safety of police officers remained a priority, particularly when members faced heavily armed and hostile suspects.
“Police officers must never be expected to face heavily armed criminals without the appropriate tactical support,” she said.
She said police responses to armed threats must be proportionate, coordinated and decisive, while ensuring that civilian safety remained central to tactical operations.
Dimpane also urged communities to support police efforts by reporting threats, illegal firearms and suspicious activities. Members of the public caught in dangerous situations were advised to prioritise their safety and follow instructions from law enforcement.
An unnamed police official was injured during the incident and Dimpane wished the member a speedy recovery.
“We will continue to confront threats to public safety with determination. Criminals who turn firearms against police officers and innocent people must know that the SAPS will respond with the full capability of the Service,” she said.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the events leading to the standoff and the death of the suspect, are subject to further investigation.
