Jacobsdal – A 28-year-old police constable has been arrested after allegedly shooting a 25-year-old woman and holding her hostage during a tense standoff in Ratanang Township, Jacobsdal, in the Free State on Sunday.
The incident began at about 11.45am on 16 August 2026, when police received information about a hostage situation in Moabi Street.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the woman was allegedly shot in the shoulder by the constable, who is stationed in Hanover in the Northern Cape.
Xhariep District Commissioner Brigadier Mohiti Sereetsi, the Bloemfontein Tactical Response Team (TRT), Crime Intelligence, hostage negotiators and other police personnel were deployed to the scene.
Hostage negotiators then spent several hours engaging with the suspect in an effort to resolve the situation without further bloodshed.
At about 8.25pm, the suspect surrendered his service pistol and handed himself over to police.
SAPS said the injured woman was treated by emergency medical personnel before being transported to a hospital in Kimberley for further treatment.
A case of kidnapping and attempted murder has been opened. The police constable was arrested and is expected to appear in the Jacobsdal Magistrate’s Court.
Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia commended the officers and other role players involved in the operation.
“This incident demonstrates the importance of professional hostage negotiation, patience and a coordinated multidisciplinary response when dealing with volatile and potentially life-threatening situations,” Lesia said.
“The successful resolution of this incident, without further loss of life, is a commendable achievement,” he added.
Lesia also praised the hostage negotiators, TRT, Crime Intelligence and Xhariep District management for their handling of the standoff.
“Their primary focus remained the preservation of life, and their commitment and professionalism must be acknowledged,” he said.
The provincial commissioner wished the injured woman a speedy recovery and said the constable would face due legal process.
“At the same time, the suspect will face the full might of the law, and the circumstances surrounding this incident will be thoroughly investigated,” Lesia said.
“SAPS members are equally subject to the law, and any allegations of criminal conduct will be dealt with through due process,” he added.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and hostage situation is continuing.
