Cape Town – Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia says hundreds of discrepancies have been identified in lifestyle reviews of senior police management officials over the past five years.
According to Eyewitness News, Cachalia told Parliament that the discrepancies mainly involved officials failing to declare vehicles, properties and company directorships.
“Asset declaration and financial disclosure processes identified cases that warranted further scrutiny in relation to unexplained wealth indicators,” Cachalia said.
Cachalia said most of the discrepancies were resolved through consultation, including the verification and correction of records.
His remarks came as the Democratic Alliance questioned the South African Police Service Amendment Bill and called for capable Metro Police services to be given limited investigative powers.
In a media statement DA MP Lisa Schickerling said the Bill should address the need to expand policing powers and strengthen crime-fighting capacity in municipalities.
“The DA will support amendments to the Bill to achieve this goal,” Schickerling said.
The DA said it would push for expanded investigative powers for Metro Police, subject to national standards, training, accreditation and oversight.
