Cape Town – Popular South African DJ and television personality Lamiez Holworthy has opened up about a terrifying health scare after she was rushed to hospital last Sunday and underwent emergency surgery.
In an emotional Facebook post, Lamiez revealed that she nearly lost her life and said the past few days had been “scary and painful beyond words”. She credited her faith, medical intervention and the support of her loved ones for helping her through the ordeal.
“I nearly died. I nearly lost my life and probably would’ve if I wasn’t rushed to the hospital on Sunday,” she wrote.
Lamiez said the medical emergency occurred just seven minutes away from her next venue, with six more gigs still scheduled. The experience forced her to confront the toll her busy work schedule had taken on her body and prompted her to reconsider the importance she places on work.
“The biggest lesson that I learnt? To listen to my body and that there is no honour in working yourself to death,” she said.
She questioned what the value of working tirelessly would have been if it had cost her life, while acknowledging that she is human and cannot continue to push herself as though she were a machine.
Lamiez said the ordeal also reminded her of the importance of being present and healthy for her husband, parents, siblings, children and other loved ones. She has since returned home and said her body had fought hard to overcome what she described as the worst.
She revealed that she will now take time away from work to recover, heal and reconnect with herself.
The DJ also addressed comments made about her appearance while she was in hospital, after a photograph of her was allegedly used to body-shame her.
She explained that she had deliberately worn the outfit in the photograph to challenge unrealistic expectations around women’s bodies. She said she had openly told her audience in Bloemfontein that she wore the dress to show that she was a normal woman with cellulite and stretch marks.
“I gained weight and wasn’t going to try and hide it. So, to have a woman try and use it to belittle me is even more insane,” she said.
She expressed disappointment that another woman would use her appearance against her, particularly while she was fighting for her life in hospital.
Lamiez also said she had lost a significant amount of blood during the medical emergency, with her doctor considering a blood transfusion.
“How I am able to type this is a miracle,” she said, reflecting on how close she believes she came to dying.
Despite the ordeal, Lamiez remained grounded in her faith, saying she believes God was present throughout her struggle.
“Modimo o teng and ga nyake ka bana ba gae,” she wrote.
Rather than engaging further with those she believes are projecting negativity towards her, she said she would focus on healing and recovery.
She ended her message by extending healing and prayers to the woman she believes targeted her, while choosing to prioritise her own wellbeing after a traumatic few days.
For now, Lamiez says her focus is on recovering, reconnecting with herself and returning as a healthier version of herself.
