Durban – A 43-year-old woman was allegedly strangled and killed during an argument with her boyfriend at a Cornubia flat in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday morning, with her 12-year-old son witnessing the attack, according to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA).
RUSA said concerned neighbours contacted its officers at about 6.19am after the incident.
Officers found the woman’s body outside her home near the front door. Her 39-year-old boyfriend, who was allegedly heavily intoxicated, was still at the scene.
According to RUSA, the woman’s son told officers that his stepfather assaulted and strangled his mother during an argument at about 5am.
The child was unable to tell officers what had triggered the argument and fled to his aunt’s home next door for help.
“On arrival, Reaction Officers located the woman’s lifeless body outside her home near the front door. Her heavily intoxicated 39-year-old boyfriend remained at the scene,” RUSA said.
The suspect was restrained by Reaction Officers after they interviewed the boy.
RUSA said blood was found on the suspect’s shirt and that he had sustained a burst lip during an altercation with the woman.
The boy allegedly told officers that the incident was not the first time he had witnessed violence against his mother.
“According to the child, this was not the first incident, and he had witnessed the suspect assaulting his mother on several previous occasions,” RUSA said.
The circumstances surrounding the woman’s death and the alleged assault are expected to be investigated further by police.
