Cape Town – Afrika Mayibuye Movement leader Floyd Shivambu says he was the victim of a theft at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront this week after a hired vehicle was broken into ahead of a party meeting, with electronic devices, identity documents and bank cards among the items stolen.
In a statement posted on Facebook on Thursday, Shivambu said the incident occurred on 5 August 2026 before attending the Mayibuye councillor candidates’ verification meeting.
“Yesterday, the 5th of August 2026, we were victims of theft at the Waterfront in Cape Town before attending the MAYIBUYE Councillor candidates verification meeting,” Shivambu wrote.
According to Shivambu, the suspect allegedly broke into the hired vehicle and stole several valuables.
“A thief whose images we later found from the Waterfront Security/Control Room broke into the hired car we were using and stole the travel handbag, hand bag, and backpack which had a laptop (MacBook Pro), 2 iPads, watches, personal ID cards, Bank cards, and other basic necessities,” he said.
Shivambu said the matter was reported to the South African Police Service (SAPS), with a case opened at Table Bay Harbour Police Station on the day of the incident.
“We opened a police case with the SAPS… registered on 2026-08-05 at TABLE BAY HARBOUR Police Station, ref nr CAS 9/8/2026,” he said, adding that “there were also other theft victims who were reporting similar crimes at the police station.”
The Afrika Mayibuye Movement leader said V&A Waterfront security officials provided police with surveillance images of the alleged suspect.
“The images attached here are the photos of the alleged thief retrieved by the V&A Waterfront Security/Control room and handed over to the SAPS. We hope the culprits will be arrested and the stolen items recovered,” Shivambu said.
