Cape Town – Capitec Bank Holdings Limited has confirmed that it will officially become Capitec Limited later this month after the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) approved and registered the company’s name change.
The move follows shareholder approval at the company’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), where the special resolution to change the company’s name was adopted.
In a statement, Capitec said: “Special resolution number 2 was filed with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) and the Company has received confirmation of its registration from the CIPC, thereby approving and effecting the Name Change.”
The company said the last day to trade shares under the current name, Capitec Bank Holdings Limited, will be Tuesday, 25 August 2026. Trading under the new name, Capitec Limited, will begin on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, with the record date set for Friday, 28 August 2026.
Dematerialised shareholders will have their accounts updated automatically on 31 August 2026, while certificated shareholders will have their entitlements credited to Computershare Nominees Proprietary Limited pending the surrender of their existing share certificates.
Capitec also reminded shareholders that physical share certificates issued under the old company name may no longer be dematerialised or rematerialised after 25 August 2026.

“Shareholders are reminded that shares in companies listed on the JSE can no longer be bought or sold on the JSE unless they have been dematerialised onto the Strate system,” the company said.
The bank encouraged shareholders who still hold paper share certificates to contact their broker or a Central Securities Depository Participant (CSDP) to convert them into electronic records.
Despite the corporate name change, Capitec confirmed that its stock market listing will remain unchanged.
“The Company will remain listed on the Main Board of the JSE in the Banks sector of the Financials industry,” the statement said.
The company added that its JSE share code (CPI), abbreviated name (Capitec), ISIN (ZAE000035861), shareholder register and trading history will all remain unchanged.
Founded in Stellenbosch in 2001 by Michiel le Roux, Riaan Stassen and Jannie Mouton, Capitec started as a microlender focused on serving South Africans underserved by traditional banks, BusinessTech reported.
Since then, it has grown into the country’s largest bank by customer numbers, serving more than 25 million clients.
The bank listed on the JSE in 2002 and has expanded from its banking roots into a diversified financial services group while maintaining its focus on accessible and affordable financial services.
