Cape Town – A 31-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of attempting to murder police officers during a stop-and-search operation in Kensington, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed.
The Cape Town Regional Court sentenced Tohier Adams on Tuesday, 28 July, to life imprisonment on two counts of attempted murder, along with five years’ imprisonment for the illegal possession of a firearm and two years’ imprisonment for the illegal possession of ammunition.
“The sentence followed after Tohier was found guilty of attacking members of Kensington SAPS while they were conducting stop-and-search operations in the Kensington policing precinct on 22 April 2024,” SAPS said in a statement.
Police said officers came under gunfire from an unidentified suspect during the operation, leaving one officer seriously injured.
“The members were shot at by an unknown person, and a police constable sustained serious injuries,” the statement said.
The breakthrough in the case came after detectives from the Serious Violent Crime Unit gathered key evidence linking Adams to the shooting.
“During the investigation, Serious Violent Crime Unit detectives collected evidence and video footage, which led to the identification and arrest of the accused,” SAPS said.
Police added that prosecutors presented a strong case during the trial, resulting in Adams’ conviction.
“During the court proceedings, a well-prepared case was presented before the court, and the accused was found guilty,” the statement said.
Welcoming the sentence, Western Cape police management said it sends a clear message that attacks on law enforcement officers will not be tolerated.
“The Western Cape police management welcomed the sentence and said that attacks on police members while executing their duties will be dealt with to the full might of the law,” SAPS said.
The conviction forms part of ongoing efforts by police to combat violent crime and protect officers carrying out their duties in high-risk policing areas.
