Cape Town – The Electoral Commission (IEC) has urged eligible South Africans to register or update their voter details during the final voter registration weekend on 1 and 2 August, ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections.
The IEC said the weekend marks the last opportunity to register at voting stations before the election date is officially proclaimed. After the registration drive, the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs is expected to announce the official election date.
To register, citizens must be South African, 16 years or older (although only those aged 18 and above can vote), and present either an original green barcoded ID book, Smart ID card or a valid Temporary Identity Certificate.

Voters can register or update their details at voting stations during the weekend, online via the IEC’s Voter Information Portal, or at local IEC offices.
The commission also urged registered voters to update their information if they have moved, changed ID numbers, or if their ward or voting district has changed to ensure they can vote at the correct polling station on election day.
