Durban – A 59-year-old businessman was robbed at knifepoint while shopping in Verulam’s central business district in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday, with suspects making off with about R1,500 in cash.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the incident occurred at about 11:08 on Ireland Street.
RUSA officers on patrol were flagged down by the victim shortly after the robbery.
The businessman told officers he had travelled to Verulam CBD to purchase stock for his tuck shop in Riet River. After buying supplies from one business, he was walking along Ireland Street to make further purchases near the taxi rank when he was confronted by two men.
“The suspects allegedly confronted the businessman while each brandished a knife. One suspect searched his pocket and stole approximately R1,500 in cash before both robbers fled on foot in an unknown direction,” RUSA said.
The suspects were described as wearing an orange T-shirt and blue jeans, and a green T-shirt and blue jeans, respectively.
RUSA said reaction officers launched an extensive search for the suspects, but no arrests had been made.
Police investigations into the robbery are expected to continue.
