Durban – A 33-year-old woman was injured after using her body to shield her 18-month-old daughter when a retaining wall collapsed onto their home in Mountview, KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), its members responded to an unnamed road off Bridgeford Drive at about 1.07pm following reports that a neighbouring retaining wall had given way and crashed onto a wood-and-iron house.
The collapse caused extensive damage to the structure.
RUSA said the woman and her daughter were inside the home when the wall collapsed.
The toddler had been asleep at the time of the incident. As debris fell, the mother reportedly shielded the child with her body, sustaining injuries to her head and back.
Neighbours rushed to the scene and managed to free both mother and child from the wreckage before RUSA officers arrived.
Paramedics treated the injured woman at the scene before transporting her to hospital by ambulance.
The toddler escaped without serious injuries.
The cause of the retaining wall collapse was not immediately known. No further information was available.
