Durban – A newborn baby boy was found abandoned outside a residence in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday night after a resident returning home from work discovered the infant wrapped in a blanket at his front door.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the baby was found on Vusi Mtshali Drive in R Section, Umlazi.
The resident reportedly contacted the RUSA Operations Centre after making the discovery.
RUSA said the infant’s umbilical cord and placenta were still attached, indicating that he had been born only a short time earlier.
Despite the circumstances, the baby appeared to be in good health.
The resident reportedly alerted the relevant authorities at about 21:30, but by 23:32, assistance had allegedly not yet arrived, according to RUSA.
The emergency response organisation appealed to the public for assistance, asking anyone who could help to contact its operations centre.
It was not immediately clear who had abandoned the child, and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
Authorities have not yet released further information.
