Johannesburg – One person has reportedly been shot and killed in Alexandra following anti-illegal immigration protests on Tuesday, 30 June, as demonstrations in parts of the country descended into violence.
The incident comes as South Africa saw a wave of protests linked to concerns over illegal immigration, with several groups calling for stronger enforcement of immigration laws and action against undocumented foreign nationals.
Authorities had repeatedly warned that while the right to peaceful protest is protected under the Constitution, violence, intimidation and criminality would not be tolerated.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has warned against xenophobia and violence, saying concerns around migration should not lead to attacks on foreign nationals.
“Unrest, violence and intimidation tear at the social fabric of our communities,” Ramaphosa said recently, adding that responsibility for enforcing immigration laws rests with the state.
Further details around the Alexandra shooting, including the identity of the victim and whether any arrests have been made, are expected from authorities.
