Cacadu – A 31-year-old man is expected to appear before the Cacadu Magistrate’s Court in the Eastern Cape province on Monday, 29 June 2026, following his arrest for the murder of a 64-year-old domestic worker in the Ndonga Administration Area.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said the suspect was arrested at his homestead shortly after the incident, following swift investigations by the Cacadu Crime Prevention and Detectives Unit.
According to police, the incident occurred on Saturday, 27 June 2026, at around 11:00, when the victim arrived at a homestead where she was due to perform domestic duties for an elderly, disabled woman requiring full-time assistance.
Police said that while the victim was warming water to begin her chores, she was confronted by the homeowner’s grandson, who questioned her presence at the property.
“As the elderly woman attempted to explain the victim’s presence, the grandson allegedly retrieved an axe from his bedroom and repeatedly struck the victim,” SAPS said in a statement.
The victim reportedly fled the house while screaming for help, but neighbours who rushed to the scene were unable to save her. She succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
The suspect was arrested shortly thereafter and remains in custody pending his court appearance.
District Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph condemned the attack, expressing concern over violent conduct involving young people in vulnerable community settings.
“The law must take its course to eradicate such barbaric conduct in our communities,” Major General Adolph said.
Police have described the incident as a serious violent crime, underscoring ongoing concerns about domestic-related killings and attacks within households in rural areas.
