Johannesburg – The South African Police Service (SAPS) has held talks with the leadership of the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) as part of preparations for the planned 30 June demonstrations, urging the industry to help prevent violence and disruption.
Acting National Police Commissioner Lt Gen Puleng Dimpane said police met SANTACO president Abner Tsebe and his leadership collective to engage directly with the taxi sector, which authorities say plays a critical role in national mobility and economic activity.
Police said they had made a “firm request” for the taxi industry to support law enforcement efforts and ensure that operations continue without disruption during the planned protests.
“We have requested them to stand with law enforcement. We have requested them to stand with the people of South Africa,” the briefing notes read.
SAPS urged taxi operators nationwide to continue normal operations, warning against any attempts to block roads, intimidate commuters or disrupt transport networks.
“We appeal to them to reject any calls to block roads, intimidate commuters or disrupt public life,” police said.
Authorities further warned that criminal elements must not be allowed to use the taxi industry to destabilise communities or interfere with public order.
The police leadership stressed that the consequences of unrest would be felt by ordinary citizens, including workers and learners who rely heavily on public transport.
“When roads are blocked, workers cannot get to work. When transport is disrupted, learners cannot get to school,” SAPS said.
While acknowledging SANTACO’s cooperation and a “positive response” from its leadership, police said law enforcement agencies would remain on high alert nationwide.
SAPS confirmed that officers will be deployed across the country to maintain public safety, protect peaceful protest action, and respond swiftly to any violence or destruction of property.
Authorities warned that any attempts to block roads, damage infrastructure or intimidate the public would be dealt with decisively.
Police have also appealed to taxi operators, associations and commuters to act as “ambassadors for peace” ahead of the demonstrations.
