Hill-Lewis pushes Ramaphosa to downgrade Steenhuisen

Cape Town – The Democratic Alliance (DA) has reshuffled its representation in the Government of National Unity (GNU), with party leader Geordin Hill-Lewis saying the changes are aimed at improving performance and delivering on the party’s mandate.

A key change is the replacement of John Steenhuisen as Minister of Agriculture with Willie Aucamp. Steenhuisen is moved to become Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition.

“Following a careful assessment of the DA’s team in the government of national unity, I have written to President Ramaphosa setting out several changes to the Democratic Alliance’s representation in the national executive,” Hill-Lewis said.

“Willie Aucamp will replace John Steenhuisen as Minister of Agriculture. During his tenure, Minister Steenhuisen spearheaded the expansion of market access for South Africa’s agricultural products and made progress in the procurement and distribution of vaccines for Foot-and-Mouth disease (FMD).”

Hill-Lewis said Aucamp will focus on resolving the ongoing foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) crisis and restoring confidence in the agricultural sector, while also expanding market access for South African exports.

Other changes include David Maynier being appointed Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment. Alexandra Abrahams moves to Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy, where she is expected to contribute to reform and energy sector improvements.

Yusuf Cassim will become Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, while Jack Bloom is appointed Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation.

Hill-Lewis said the reshuffle reflects the DA’s commitment to accountability and performance, stating: “We believe in accountability in public office, high standards of performance, and responsiveness to the needs of South Africans.”

He added that the changes are intended to strengthen the party’s role in government and advance its vision of an “open, opportunity society” aimed at economic growth and job creation.
