Cape Town – The case involving alleged crime boss and businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and his co-accused has been postponed to Wednesday, 17 June 2026, following further delays in the Johannesburg High Court.
Matlala appeared in court on Monday alongside his wife, Tsakani Matlala, Musa Kekana and Tiego Floyd Mabusela. Co-accused Nthabiseng Nzama was not present in court.
The accused are listed as follows: Kekana is accused one, Mabusela accused two, Matlala accused three, Tsakani Matlala accused four, and Nzama accused five.
The group faces 25 charges, including 11 counts of attempted murder linked to three separate shooting incidents allegedly carried out between August 2022 and January 2024.
The State alleges that the accused orchestrated the shootings, laundered money connected to the alleged plot, and used a fraudulent invoice to conceal the source of funds and mislead the court.
Matlala also faces charges relating to an alleged failed assassination attempt on his former girlfriend, Tebogo Thobejane, as well as the shootings of taxi boss Joe Sibanyoni and music producer Seunkie “DJ Vetteys” Mokubong.
Proceedings were delayed after Matlala’s legal team indicated its intention to bring an application compelling the State to provide outstanding particulars that had previously been requested.
Acting Judge William Karam granted the legal team of accused one permission to withdraw from the matter.
He further noted that the court had undertaken to ensure that the new attorney would be provided with additional memory sticks received from the State, allowing full access to all defence material.
Addressing the court regarding Mabusela, Judge Karam ordered that the court record be endorsed to reflect that accused two should receive the necessary medical treatment for his eyes as soon as possible.
“In respect of accused number two, the J7 is to be endorsed to the effect that accused number two (Mabusela) is as soon as possible to receive the necessary medical attention pertaining to his eyes,” he said.
Judge Karam also ruled that accused one, two and three would remain in custody, while Tsakani Matlala’s bail was extended.
“Accused one, two, and three are to remain in custody. Accused number four, you are on bail. Your bail is extended until that date and you are warned to appear,” he said.
