Eastern Cape – A 26-year-old man was shot and killed while two other people narrowly survived a shooting at a pharmacy in the Sejoseng Business Centre in Qumbu, Eastern Cape, on Saturday.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), officers responded to reports of an active shooting at about 11:20am and found the deceased lying behind the pharmacy counter.
Two other victims survived the attack. One sustained injuries to the lower body and was transported to a medical facility for treatment, while the second escaped without physical injuries.
Police said the three victims had arrived at the pharmacy to purchase masks when gunfire suddenly erupted.
“It is alleged that the three victims had arrived at the pharmacy to purchase masks. As they attempted to enter, gunfire erupted. The victims took cover inside, and the shooting continued for some time before the suspect(s) fled,” SAPS said.
Authorities confirmed that nothing was stolen from either the victims or the pharmacy, leaving investigators with no immediate indication of a robbery motive.
Crime scene investigators recovered multiple rifle cartridges, projectiles and sealed bullets from the scene as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police have opened cases of murder and two counts of attempted murder. The motive for the attack remains unknown, and no arrests have been made.
The SAPS has appealed to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or submit information through the MySAPSApp. All information will be treated confidentially.
