Limpopo – A 24-year-old woman has died after sustaining severe burn injuries in an alleged domestic violence incident in Noodhulp, Bela-Bela, prompting police to upgrade an attempted murder case to murder.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the incident occurred on 31 May 2026 following an argument between the woman and her 36-year-old boyfriend.
Police allege that during the altercation, the suspect left the scene and later returned carrying a flammable substance, which he allegedly poured over the victim before setting her alight. The suspect reportedly suffered burn injuries to his hands during the incident.
Both the victim and the suspect were admitted to Bela-Bela Hospital, where police opened a case of attempted murder.
Following an investigation, the suspect was arrested on 8 June and charged with attempted murder. He appeared in the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on 10 June, where he was remanded in custody pending a formal bail application scheduled for 17 June.
The victim succumbed to her injuries on 12 June while receiving medical treatment, leading investigators to upgrade the charge to murder.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe condemned the incident, describing it as a senseless act of violence.
“The continued abuse and killing of women remains a serious concern. Such acts have no place in our society, and the law must take its course without fear or favour,” Hadebe said.
Police investigations are continuing.
