Cape Town – For many people who have lost a loved one, grief never truly disappears. It softens with time, but certain moments can bring it rushing back as if the loss happened only yesterday. For rising singer Naledi Aphiwe, visiting her late mother’s grave this week was one of those moments.
The 19-year-old singer took to Instagram on Monday, 8 June, to share an emotional tribute to her mother, whose birthday she had marked the day before. Alongside photographs taken at her mother’s gravesite and a touching video montage of family memories, Naledi opened up about the deep void her mother’s absence continues to leave in her life.
In a heartfelt message, she reflected on how standing at her mother’s grave brought back a flood of memories and reminded her just how much she misses her.
“Yesterday was your birthday, Mom, and today I came to visit you. Standing here brings back so many memories, and it reminds me just how much I miss you,” she wrote.
Naledi admitted that while she often tries to be strong, losing her mother left a permanent mark on her heart.
“There are days when I try to be strong, but the truth is that a part of my heart left with you,” she said.
The young star shared how much she longs for the simple moments they once shared hearing her mother’s voice, talking about her day and receiving one of her comforting hugs.
As her career continues to flourish, Naledi revealed that some of her proudest achievements are bittersweet because she cannot celebrate them with the person she wishes were still by her side.
“I secured the bag, Mom. I landed big deals with Stumbo, and all I wanted was to tell you first,” she wrote.
She said she often imagines how proud her mother would have been to see her pursuing her dreams and building a successful future for herself.
“I know how happy you would have been to see me growing, chasing my dreams, and making things happen for myself.”

Despite the pain of her loss, Naledi finds comfort in believing that her mother continues to watch over her, guiding her through life’s challenges and celebrating her victories from afar.
“Every win feels incomplete because I can’t share it with you the way I used to. But deep down, I believe you’re watching over me, celebrating every achievement and guiding me through every difficult time.”
She ended her tribute with a promise that resonated with many of her followers — a promise to keep making her mother proud.
“No matter how much I achieve, a part of me will always wish you were here to witness it. Keep watching over me, Mom. I love you, I miss you, and I’ll make you proud every single day.”
The post quickly touched the hearts of fans, many of whom related to the pain of losing a parent and the bittersweet reality of achieving milestones without being able to share them with the people who helped shape their lives.
Through her emotional tribute, Naledi reminded many that while grief may change over time, love endures living on in memories, milestones and the quiet hope that those we have lost are still watching over us.
