Cape Town – Rise Mzansi MP Makashule Gana has been elected chairperson of Parliament’s 31-member Phala Phala Impeachment Committee after securing 19 votes, defeating ATM MP Dr Wonderboy Mahlatsi, who received 12 votes.
Gana was nominated by ANC MP Mikateko Mahlaule and supported by the ANC, DA, Patriotic Alliance and Freedom Front Plus, while the EFF, MK Party and several smaller parties backed Mahlatsi.

The newly formed committee held its first meeting on Monday to elect leadership before beginning its work on the Section 89 inquiry into President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The panel will reassess the Phala Phala impeachment report following a Constitutional Court ruling that found Parliament’s 2022 decision to reject the report was unconstitutional.

The committee includes members from 16 political parties, with the ANC holding the largest share of nine seats, followed by the DA with five, the MK Party with three, and the EFF with two, while smaller parties each hold one seat.
