Eastern Cape – A 30-year-old tavern owner is expected to appear before the Qumbu Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday after being arrested for the alleged murder of a patron over an unpaid liquor debt in the Eastern Cape.
According to the South African Police Service, the incident occurred on Monday morning at about 9:30am in Lower Ngxaxha locality, Maqhubini Administrative Area.
Police said the suspect allegedly fetched the 34-year-old victim from his home in Milani locality before assaulting him inside the tavern.
“It is alleged that the tavern owner fetched the victim from his homestead and assaulted him inside his tavern, including knocking him against a wall, over an undisclosed amount of unpaid liquor debt,” police said in a statement.
Authorities were called to the scene after the victim reportedly lost consciousness. He was later declared dead.
The suspect was arrested and charged with murder.
Acting OR Tambo District Commissioner Vukile Ntuli condemned the incident and called for a thorough investigation.
“It is a very sad situation that someone had to die for allegedly owing someone money. Police must leave no stone unturned in bringing a watertight case before the court of law for justice to be served,” Ntuli said.
He also extended condolences to the victim’s family and friends.
