North West – Eleven suspects arrested in a major intelligence-driven drug bust in Swartruggens have appeared before the Swartruggens Magistrate’s Court in the North West, where the case was postponed for seven days.
The accused face multiple charges including drug manufacturing, illegal possession of precious metals, possession of hazardous materials and contravention of the Immigration Act.
They were remanded in custody and are expected back in court on 22 May 2026.
According to the South African Police Service, the suspects were arrested on 13 May during an operation led by Crime Intelligence, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) and the South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau (SANEB), supported by other law enforcement units.
Police said the operation uncovered a suspected large-scale clandestine methamphetamine production laboratory.
“The operation led to the discovery of a large-scale illegal drug manufacturing facility believed to be involved in the production of methamphetamine,” SAPS said.
Authorities reported that approximately 481 kilograms of methamphetamine, along with chemicals, manufacturing equipment and three firearms, were seized at the scene. The estimated value of the illicit laboratory is believed to exceed R1 billion, with forensic analysis still ongoing.
The accused include five Mexican nationals, two Mozambican nationals, one Zimbabwean national, and three South African citizens.
SAPS said preliminary investigations suggest the facility may be the fourth drug laboratory in South Africa linked to Mexican criminal networks.
The court postponed the matter to allow for interpreters, verification of immigration status and potential formal bail applications.
“The case against eleven suspects was postponed for seven days for interpreters, verification of immigration status, and possible formal bail applications,” police said.
Investigators confirmed that relatives of the property owner, including the owner’s son, are among those arrested, while the owners themselves are still being traced for questioning.
Police said investigations are continuing and further details will be released as the case develops.
