Free State – Four people were killed and a fifth left critically injured in a shooting on the R26 between Tweeling and Reitz in the Free State on Thursday, according to the South African Police Service.
Police said the victims were travelling when they were attacked by gunmen driving in a green Mercedes-Benz and a white Honda fitted with Kingdom of Lesotho registration plates.
In a statement issued on Thursday, SAPS said: “The preliminary report is that four (4) persons; three (3) males, and a female died after being attacked and shot at by assailants driving in a Green Mercedes Benz and White Honda with Kingdom of Lesotho registration number plates.”
Police confirmed that four victims died at the scene after sustaining gunshot wounds, while a fifth victim was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
“The four (4) victims succumbed to gunshot wounds on the scene, and the fifth victim was rushed to the nearby hospital in critical condition,” SAPS said.
Authorities have appealed to members of the public who may have information related to the shooting to come forward as investigations continue.
“Any member of the public with information is requested contact Captain Dladla at 082 466 8530. An anonymous tip-off can be submitted on MySAPS App or call the SAPS Crime Stop number. The information can also be reported at any police station,” the statement read.
The motive for the attack has not yet been disclosed, and no arrests had been announced by Thursday evening.
