Pretoria – The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has criticised Cyril Ramaphosa after he announced plans to revive a judicial review challenging the Section 89 Independent Panel Report linked to the Phala Phala scandal.
In a national address on Monday, Ramaphosa said he would not resign and maintained that he had “not stolen public money, committed any crime, nor violated my oath of office.”
He said resigning would “pre-empt a process defined by the constitution.”
The EFF, however, accused the president of using legal processes to delay accountability, describing the move as “opportunistic” and aimed at political survival.
The party argued that Ramaphosa only revived the legal challenge after the Constitutional Court ruled that Parliament acted unlawfully when it blocked an impeachment inquiry in 2022.
EFF spokesperson Sinawo Thambo said the party would oppose Ramaphosa’s review application in court and push for an urgent hearing, warning against “endless legal delays orchestrated by a compromised President.”
“The EFF will therefore join the review application in opposition to President Ramaphosa and will demand that the matter be treated with urgency on the court roll, precisely because it concerns a matter of profound national importance,” he said.
“The Constitutional Court itself has already recognised the seriousness and constitutional significance of this matter, and it cannot now be subjected to endless legal delays orchestrated by a compromised President seeking political survival.”
The EFF also insisted that Parliament must continue with the impeachment process and called on Ramaphosa to resign if he had “any conscience, political integrity, or respect for the people of South Africa.”
