Pretoria – The Presidency has formally acknowledged the Constitutional Court’s ruling in the case brought by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) against the Speaker of the National Assembly, which challenged Parliament’s handling of Section 89 proceedings against President Cyril Ramaphosa.
In a statement issued on Friday, 8 May, the Presidency said: “President Cyril Ramaphosa respects the Constitutional Court’s judgment and reaffirms his commitment to the Constitution, the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law.”
The Court found that the National Assembly acted unlawfully when it rejected the Section 89 panel report in December 2022, ordering Parliament to reconsider the findings. The ruling effectively reopens the possibility of impeachment proceedings against the President.
Ramaphosa emphasized his consistent cooperation with all inquiries into the Phala Phala matter, stating: “No person is above the law and any allegations should be subjected to due process without fear, favour or prejudice.”
The Presidency further urged citizens to uphold respect for the judiciary: “The President calls on all South Africans to respect the Constitutional Court judgment and all judicial institutions.”
The statement was released by Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya, who reiterated that the President remains committed to transparency and accountability as the matter proceeds through Parliament.
