Free State – A search and recovery operation at the Vaal Dam near Oranjeville in the Free State has led to the discovery of a vehicle believed to belong to a missing 70-year-old man.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said the operation was launched after intelligence linked a submerged vehicle to the disappearance of Stephen Khanye.
“The operation was initiated following intelligence linking a submerged vehicle to a missing person investigation,” police said.
Divers from the SAPS Diving Unit, based in Bloemfontein, carried out the search under difficult conditions, including strong currents, poor weather and near-zero visibility.
“Despite these hazardous circumstances, members of the South African Police Service Diving Unit demonstrated unwavering commitment to their duty,” SAPS said.
Sergeant Zwielie Simamane and his team conducted multiple deep-water dives before locating the vehicle beneath a bridge in the Oranjeville area.
“Through perseverance and disciplined execution of search protocols, the team successfully located the submerged vehicle… after six intensive dives,” police added.
The discovery follows an earlier incident on 15 April 2026, when the body of a man identified as Mohole Stephen Khanye was found nearby after being reported missing in Mafube. Authorities believe the vehicle may be linked to that case, which is still under investigation.
Recovery efforts have been temporarily halted due to worsening weather conditions.
“Recovery operations have been temporarily suspended and will resume once conditions improve,” SAPS said.
Police said further updates will be provided as the investigation continues, adding that efforts remain focused on providing closure to the affected family.
