Cape Town – Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa has urged South Africans to remain cautious as severe weather conditions are expected across multiple provinces, following warnings from the South African Weather Service.
A slow-moving cut-off low-pressure system is forecast to bring cold, wet and windy conditions from the Western Cape to parts of the Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and Free State, with heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and potential flooding.
SAWS warned that rainfall could exceed 100–200mm in some areas, noting: “This may result in widespread flooding… damaging winds and very rough sea conditions are expected.”
Hlabisa said authorities are on high alert, with disaster management teams ready to respond.
“Emergency services and disaster management teams have been placed on high alert… Communities are encouraged to report emergencies… and to cooperate with any evacuation directives,” he said.
He also called on residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant, adding: “We call on all residents, especially those in high-risk and low-lying areas, to remain vigilant and prioritise their safety at all times.”
The minister further urged the public to follow safety guidelines and rely on official information, stressing: “We urge all South Africans to act responsibly, stay informed, and look out for one another… Early caution and preparedness can save lives.”
