Her journey with the story, however, began years ago. Mbedu revealed that she first encountered the book in 2019, describing it as a life-changing moment that led her to quietly hope and pray for the opportunity she now holds.
“‘Children of Blood and Bone’ was gifted to me in 2019 and, truly, it’s one of the best gifts I’ve received. Upon reading it I fell in love with it – to the point that I made it a prayer point,” she shared.

She went on to reflect on rediscovering that very prayer in an old journal before travelling to Philadelphia last year, calling the experience overwhelming and humbling.
“To know that I have the opportunity to work with some of the most amazing people as we tell this great story is truly humbling. I’m so excited. I’m so grateful.”
Mbedu also expressed gratitude to the novel’s author, Tomi Adeyemi, as well as to supporters who have followed her journey, promising that the film will make them proud.
As the countdown to January 2027 continues, Mbedu’s story stands as a powerful blend of ambition, faith and fulfilment, a dream realised on a global stage.
