Durban – Police have launched a manhunt for a group of suspects who attacked two Crime Intelligence officers in Durban on Thursday afternoon, leaving one officer dead and another critically injured.
Acting National Commissioner Puleng Dimpane said maximum resources have been mobilised to track down those responsible for the attack, which occurred in the Mount Edgecombe area.
According to the South African Police Service, the officers were travelling in a state vehicle when they were targeted. The driver succumbed to gunshot wounds at the scene, while a second officer, who was also shot, was airlifted to hospital and is receiving urgent medical treatment.
“A manhunt has been launched for the suspects,” Dimpane said.
Specialised police units, including Crime Intelligence operatives, detectives and members of the organised crime unit, have been deployed and are working around the clock to apprehend those involved.
Dimpane condemned the attack, describing it as an assault on the authority of the state and on officers who risk their lives combating crime.
“No stone will be left unturned in ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice,” she said.
The SAPS has also deployed Employee Health and Wellness teams, including psychologists and chaplains, to support the family of the deceased officer as well as members of the Crime Intelligence unit.
Police extended condolences to the fallen officer’s family, friends and colleagues, and wished the injured member a full and speedy recovery.
