Cape Town – The Ministry of Police has strongly condemned recent attacks targeting Ghanaian nationals and other foreign nationals in South Africa, warning that perpetrators will face the full might of the law.
In a statement issued by the South African Police Service (SAPS), the ministry described the incidents as xenophobic acts of violence and intimidation that undermine the country’s constitutional values.
“These actions are not only unlawful, but they stand in direct opposition to the values of dignity, equality, and human rights upon which our democracy is founded,” the ministry said.
Authorities stressed that no individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands, regardless of grievances, adding that South Africa remains a constitutional state governed by the rule of law.
The ministry warned that acts of xenophobia, violence, looting and intimidation will not be tolerated under any circumstances. SAPS has been instructed to act decisively in responding to such incidents, with those involved set to be identified, arrested and prosecuted.
“The South African Police Service has been instructed to act decisively and without hesitation in addressing these incidents. All those found to be participating in, inciting, or supporting such criminal conduct will be identified, apprehended, and brought before the courts,” the statement said.
The ministry also called on communities to remain calm and resist efforts to fuel division and hatred, urging community leaders, civil society organisations and residents to work with law enforcement to prevent further violence.
It further emphasised the need for dialogue and cooperation to promote social cohesion and protect the rights of all who live in the country.
