Cape Town – Nine suspects aged between 18 and 25 have been arrested in Atlantis, Western Cape, after a violent incident linked to the burning of a truck and the recovery of multiple stolen television sets.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the arrests were made on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning in the Covid informal settlement.
SAPS said: “Nine suspects between the ages of 18 and 25, were arrested for theft and possession of stolen property, at the Covid informal settlement in Atlantis this morning, 16 April 2026.”
The police said the arrests followed an incident on Wednesday evening in which a truck was set alight near John Dreyer Road.
“Members of Public Order Police were deployed to monitor the situation. As they approached the crime scene on foot, they spotted the suspects carrying flat-screen television boxes,” SAPS said.
The situation escalated when officers moved in on the group.
“They then came under attack as the group started throwing stones. The members managed to ward off the attack and apprehended nine male suspects,” police said.
A total of 17 television sets were recovered from the suspects.
SAPS confirmed that once charged, the suspects are expected to appear in the Atlantis Magistrate’s Court.
