Volksrust – The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched both internal and criminal investigations following allegations that a police constable assaulted a member of the public at the Volksrust Police Station in Mpumalanga.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on 2 April 2026, has drawn attention after a video circulating on social media appeared to show the alleged assault.
In a statement, SAPS confirmed that it is treating the matter with urgency, with an internal probe initiated to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. A separate criminal investigation is also underway.
“The SAPS has instituted an internal investigation to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. In addition to the internal investigation, a criminal investigation is also underway to ensure all aspects of this matter are addressed transparently,” the police said.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has also been notified and is expected to conduct a parallel investigation.
SAPS said IPID’s involvement forms part of efforts to ensure accountability and transparency within the police service.
Acting Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, said the organisation would take decisive action if wrongdoing is confirmed.
“The professional conduct of our members is of utmost importance, and we are committed to maintaining public trust. We are determined to act swiftly and decisively against any wrongdoing,” Mkhwanazi said.
Police reiterated their commitment to upholding professionalism and adherence to the SAPS Code of Conduct as investigations continue.
