Free State – Bultfontein detectives have launched a murder investigation following the fatal shooting of a 59-year-old man inside a vehicle near his home in Phahameng, the South African Police Service said.
Police confirmed the incident, stating: “Bultfontein detectives are investigating a case of murder after a 59-year-old man was fatally shot inside a vehicle near his home in Phahameng.”
According to SAPS, officers were called to the scene on Thursday, 02 April, at about 19:00 following reports of a shooting in the area.
“It is alleged that on Thursday, 02/04 at about 19:00 police were called to a shooting incident in Phahameng location. On arrival at the scene members saw a white Suzuki Fronx parked near the gate,” police said.
Upon arrival, officers were directed to the vehicle by a woman at the scene.
“They were then approached by an African female who directed them to the vehicle,” SAPS said.
Inside the vehicle, police found the victim seated in the driver’s seat.
“Inside the vehicle police found an African male who was identified by his wife as Masikane David Moletsane (59). The victim was found seated in the driver’s seat with his head lying on the passenger seat. He was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound in his neck. The victim was declared dead on the scene by emergency services personnel,” SAPS said.
Preliminary information suggests the shooting occurred while the victim was outside parking vehicles at his home.
“According to information the victim was outside parking vehicles in the garage. As he was about to park the third vehicle, his wife and daughter who were inside the house allegedly heard two gun shots going off,” police said.
Driver window
“They immediately went to investigate and noticed that driver window was shattered. Upon opening the driver door they found the deceased covered in blood, with his head slumped on the passenger side,” SAPS added.
The motive for the killing remains unknown and no arrests have been made.
“The motive for the murder is unclear at this stage. Police investigations are underway no arrests have been made yet,” SAPS said.
Police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
“Police urge anyone with information that could assist with investigations or possibly lead to the arrest of the suspect(s) to come forward.
